Refuse Derived Fuel

Eggersmann FUEL

Turning Biomass into Fuel

Our Eggersmann FUEL is more than the usual substitute fuel. The process for municipal solid waste (MSW) developed by the German plant manufacturer Eggersmann differs greatly from conventional concepts. The main difference: biological drying is added to the mechanical processing.

Determinable Net Calorific Value

With Eggersmann FUEL, you can define the water content via the duration of the biological drying process. Due to its high biomass content, MSW often has a moisture content of 50 to 65%. Therefore, a high amount of energy would even have to be added for incineration without pre-treatment. Drying, however, turns the biomass itself into fuel. You can actually determine the net calorific value of your substitute fuel via the drying time. This makes the Eggersmann FUEL perfect for use in energy-intensive industries. After all, combustion produces considerably less water vapor and therefore less pressure. This means that a higher proportion of substitute fuel can be used in the combustion process.

Two Options

Depending on your requirements Eggersmann FUEL can be produced in a fully closed and semi-closed process.

Fully Closed Process

For full process and emission control we recommend the use of enclosed tunnels for the biological drying. These tunnels are equipped with automated aeration, drainage, and heating systems that maintain optimal drying conditions. Moisture levels are continuously monitored and transmitted digitally to the central control system. The material infeed can be done either with a wheel loader or an automatic tunnel infeed system, which will reduce the need for manual labor to a minimum.

Semi-Closed Process

The semi-closed process uses a lane turner in combination with the CONVAERO membrane. Pre-shredded material is placed in lanes and covered with a semi-permeable membrane that allows moisture to evaporate while protecting the material from wind and rain. As a result, there is significantly less wastewater to manage.

After drying, the reduced moisture content makes the material less sticky, which greatly improves the separation of individual components. This allows for easier recovery of valuable materials—such as metals—for resale.

The Process

Landfill Diversion of up to 85%

After mechanical processing, you receive a high-quality refuse-derived fuel (RDF) with a moisture content tailored to your needs. Depending on the input material and selected drying level, you can achieve landfill diversion rates of up to 85% with the fully automated system and 80% with the semi-automated process. This not only extends the lifespan of your landfill, but also increases revenue through the sale of RDF.
